Raphael Martinez

Where are you from?

I was born in TX, but lived most of my adult life in New York City. I worked in the Fashion Industry for 15 yrs as a designer, stylist and in sales.

How long have you been in Mexico?

I have lived in Mex permanently for about 6 yrs. As a child I always visited with my family and in 2013 I moved here to teach English.

How long have you been teaching English?

I have been teaching English for about 6 yrs.  I started teaching in 2013 and have been working here in Mexico as an English teacher as follows: 6 yrs in Qro and 2 months in Puebla, but I had also traveled extensively throughout Mexico before working as a teacher and settling in Qro.

How long have you been with UE?

I have been with UE since September 2014.

Have you taught anywhere else?

Yes, before teaching here in Mex, I taught in China for a short time and also did some volunteer work in NY teaching immigrants.

What do you like about teaching at United English?

I like teaching at UE because we are allowed to be creative with our classes and in teaching our students. Our schedules are also quite flexible and always changing which is great for me as I can get bored easily.  This along with being allowed to be creative assures I am never bored and thus keeps me happy and in turn hopefully my students are also never bored and always happy.

What advice can you offer to language learners?

Never compare yourself with other students.  Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and learns at their own pace.  As a language learner you will make mistakes and this is part of the process, don´t worry about what others say or think. Stay positive and remember there is no magic key . . . practice, practice, practice.
